Mary focuses on grantmaking to support healthy communities and productive marine ecosystems through comprehensive ocean planning and management in the North American Arctic.
Mary contributed strategic thinking to the development of Moore’s Oceans and Seafood Markets Initiative, building on her studies of the global seafood market as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at UC Santa Barbara. She completed a dissertation on U.S. ocean policy at Duke University with Larry Crowder and Rafe Sagarin. Her work has been published in, among other places, Science, Ecology Law Quarterly and the Annual Review of Environment and Resources. She also worked previously for Blue Ocean Institute (now called The Safina Center) and at the National Science Foundation’s Long-Term Ecological Research Project at Palmer Station in Antarctica.
Mary grew up in Decatur, Georgia. She holds a Ph.D. in ecology from Duke University, an M.A. from the College of William and Mary, and a B.S. from Haverford College.
