Tour Our Sustainability Highlights
The Environmental Division
The Environmental Division is within the Public Works Department.
The Environmental Programs
Division establishes policies and programs to provide sufficient waste disposal
services for Cupertino residents and businesses. The Division monitors the city's garbage contract and provides composting and recycling programs to reduce
citywide waste and conserve resources with the long-term objective of
generating “zero” material citywide to send to a landfill.
The Division is also responsible
for ensuring the City’s compliance with the State-mandated Municipal Regional
Stormwater Permit (MRP) and writing the City’s Annual Stormwater Report. The
division manager represents the City on the Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff
Pollution Prevention Program - a collaborative of fifteen municipalities and
agencies in Santa Clara County that are subject to the San Francisco Bay
Regional Water Quality Control requirements to prevent stormwater runoff
pollutants from entering municipal storm drain systems and to protect the
natural hydrology of creeks, rivers and streams which drain to San Francisco
Bay.
Additionally, the Division partners with Cupertino’s Environmental Affairs Division, which sits within the Office of the City Manager, to advance Cupertino’s interdepartmental and communitywide sustainability initiatives focused on energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation, alternative transportation and commuting, green jobs, urban gardening and forestry, local/healthy food and more!
