On June 2nd, 8 am Pacific / 11 am Eastern, eLife Sciences invites you to join an in-depth exploration of the open-source publishing technology behind eLife Lens.

eLife Lens improves the reading and use of scientific articles by making it possible to explore figures, figure descriptions, references, and more without losing your place in the article text. While most online research articles tend to replicate print, eLife Lens takes greater advantage of the Internet's flexibility; readers can absorb key elements in an article more readily, more quickly, and more effectively.

First developed by Ivan Grubisic at the University of California at Berkeley, eLife Lens has been expanded into a robust, open-source tool by the team at substance.io. Lens offers access to all content published by eLife, and has been piloted by six publishers through HighWire.

In this hour-long webinar, we'll discuss how Lens supports eLife's strategy for technology and innovation, how it was developed and next steps, the HighWire pilot, and how Lens might be extended to other organizations or stages in the research process.

Presenters:

  • Ian Mulvany, eLife Head of technology
  • Michael Aufreiter & Oliver Buchtala, Co-founders of Substance
  • John Sack, Founding director, HighWire Press
  • Matt Broadhead, Assistant publications manager, European Respiratory Society
  • Peter Krautzberger, Project leader, MathJax
