Pets are family, too. Stanford offers benefits-eligible employees a benefit to help cover injuries, and illnesses for dogs, cats, birds and exotic pets.

Stanford has teamed up with Nationwide Insurance to offer benefits-eligible employees coverage for their dogs, cats, birds and exotic pets. Under Nationwide’s My Pet Protection plans, you can choose from two reimbursement options effective October 1, 2021: 70% or 50%. Additionally, you can continue to see your family vet because this insurance is accepted by veterinarians worldwide.

Plan prices for Stanford employees include a 5% discount; if you have multiple pets, you may qualify for discounts of up to 15%. All plans include a 10-day, 100% money-back guarantee from Nationwide. Available exclusively for employees: Plans with preferred pricing only offered through your company. Nationwide’s pet policies are guaranteed issuance, meaning each pet will be issued a pet policy, however it does not guarantee coverage (i.e., pre-existing conditions exclusions apply).

Pet Insurance FAQ

What is pet insurance?

A pet insurance policy can help you plan for your pet’s healthcare—and offset costs for unexpected illnesses or injuries.

How does pet insurance work?

Pet insurance policies reimburse eligible veterinary expenses based on your plan coverage.

Can I still use my vet?

Absolutely. You're free to visit any licensed veterinarian, anywhere in the world—even specialists and emergency providers.

What’s not covered?

Most pet insurers don't cover taxes, waste, grooming, boarding, or pre-existing conditions.

Does pet insurance work like an HMO?

No. You’re free to visit any vet and choose the course you feel is best for your pet. Simply pay your veterinarian at the time of treatment and send Nationwide the invoice for reimbursement. They’ll reimburse up to 70% on eligible expenses, less any applicable deductible. *

*Items such as grooming, tax, waste disposal, boarding, or pre-existing conditions are not eligible for coverage. See Nationwide’s policy documents for a complete list of exclusions.

Will pet coverage drop because of age?

As a Stanford employee you may enroll for pet insurance regardless of the age of your pet.  Coverage will not be dropped due to your pet's age once you enroll for a plan.

Will my premium increase when I file a claim?

No. We don't think it's fair to penalize you if your pet gets sick or hurt. So, go ahead and get your pet the care that he needs, as often as he needs it—it won't affect your premium.

What about pre-existing conditions?

Like all pet insurers, Nationwide does not cover pre-existing conditions on any of our plans. Pre-existing condition means any condition that began or was contracted, manifested or incurred up to twelve (12) months before the effective date of this policy or during any waiting period, whether or not the condition was discovered, diagnosed or treated. A chronic condition is a pre-existing condition unless it began after the effective date of this policy.
