About DEI

Main content start

Stanford was founded and has thrived in part by our commitment to being inclusive and embracing our differences, which have heavily contributed to our effectiveness as a community and as an educational and research institution. Now more than ever, our ability to continue to foster a culturally and intellectually diverse and vibrant community is crucial, especially due to deepening awareness of systemic racism and injustices in our nation.

The university's long-range vision process in 2019 identified an initiative called IDEAL, or Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access in a Learning Environment. The goal is to create positive change and move the university culturally into the future. As a result of this university-wide initiative, many groups were formed, project teams began collaborating, and tools and resources were developed--and continue to be--for managers and all staff.

In addition to university-wide efforts and programs, each of our schools and units has goals or existing programs and services to support the positive experience of its faculty and staff.

This website summarizes many of these efforts, though it is not meant to include all diversity efforts at Stanford.
