Tom Cramer, SUL’s Chief Technology Strategist and Associate Director, was recently interviewed with regards to his work with open-source software in digital preservation, more specifically, his work on the Hydra Project.

In the interview, Tom reflects on the very beginning of the project, when it started, how it came about, its goals and objectives, as well as its sustainability.

The Hydra Project, which started with three universities coming together with the same goal of developing “a flexible application framework…,” can now boast a 17 institution membership. The project’s developments as well as its growing membership was no doubt driven by its motto: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together!”
